Welcome and Announcements

OUR PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Prelude — As the instruments play, let us prepare ourselves for worship as we enter into the presence of the Lord.  Take time to read the “Puritan Prayer” on the back of the bulletin in preparation for worship, and the Silent Prayer here in the order of worship.

Silent Prayer
    God our redeemer, you have delivered us from the power of darkness
        and brought us into the kingdom of your Son:
            Grant, that as by his death he has recalled us to life,
                so by his continual presence in us he may raise us to eternal joy;
                     through Jesus Christ our Lord.    Amen

OUR ADORATION OF GOD

Call to Worship—

Psalm 102:19-21
     Pastor:  God looked down from the height of His sanctuary;
                    from heaven the Lord viewed the earth,
     Congregation:  To hear the groaning of the prisoner,
                                     to release those appointed
to death,
     Pastor:  To declare the name of the Lord in Zion,
     Congregation:  And His praise in Jerusalem.

Hymn 447 – Christ for the World We Sing

Reading of the New City Catechism
     Q 18:  Will God allow our disobedience and idolatry to go unpunished?
         A:  No, every sin is against the sovereignty, holiness, and goodness of God,
                   and against his righteous law,
               and God is righteously angry with our sins and will punish them
                   in his just judgment both in this life, and in the life to come.

Responsive Reading
I Corinthians 11:23-29, I Timothy 1:17

For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you:
that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;

And when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,
“Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you;
do this in remembrance of Me.”

In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying,
“This cup is the new covenant in My blood.
This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup,
you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord
in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

But let a man examine himself,
and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner
eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise,
be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Reading of the Law of God

And God spoke all these words saying: I am the LORD your God,
Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
    You shall have no other gods before Me.
    You shall not make for yourself a carved image.
    You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
    Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
    Honor your father and your mother. You shall not murder.
    You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal.
    You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet.

Hear also the words of the Lord Jesus concerning the law.
    You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
    and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment.
    And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
    On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
